From Pastor Andy Hassen
COVID 19 what a mess. This has altered many things in our daily lives and continues to do so. But as always, we keep our eyes on Jesus and follow His example and instruction.
The Springfield city council has passed a face covering ordinance that takes affect Thursday July 16, 2020. It states that all persons must wear a face covering in public. This includes stores, restaurants and churches. For the church this means wearing a mask the whole time we are in the church. The only exception is for a person who may be medically compromised by wearing a mask or when someone is performing, such as leading songs or preaching. (These individuals must maintain social distancing at all times). Also, social distancing is not an option for anyone else, masks are required at all times.
As the leadership we know this is restrictive and inconvenient and detracts some from our church experience. But even with that said Our church is planning to comply with the ordinance. To do that we expect that everyone attending church services will wear a mask.
There are many facets to this discussion and reasons for why people believe and practice what they do. Our decision to comply with the ordinance is based on two primary factors.
1. We are called to obey the authorities that God has put in place. Romans 13. Humble obedience seems to carry the blessing of God. The only exception is if they want us to do something that is directly in violation of Godly principles. WE do not believe that is the case in this situation. This can be a witness to a chaotic and aggressive world that we trust God to take care of us as we follow His teachings.
2. Second and more importantly we are carrying out the 2nd great commandment and the teachings of Paul. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love, give preference to one another in honor” Romans 12:10 “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3. We are caring and loving each other by making sure we help everyone to stay healthy. This precaution is an act of service for our brothers and sisters. We are honoring God in this.
We have not factored in any other ideas like the validity or invalidity of the numbers, possible conspiracies and agendas etc. These are too subjective. We base our decision on honoring God in the manner He has prescribed, obeying authorities and loving our fellow man.
Personally, I look forward to Sabbath and all of us being together to worship and study, masked up and ready to go. Its sure beats not being together at all. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter and your humble heart before God and your brothers and sisters.
